Changing the World Through Art

Sierra Pirkey, Staff Writer

Berthoud High School art students worked hard all January to create personalized portraits for children in Nigeria. Every year students enrolled in Drawing 2 get the chance to participate in the Memory Project, which allows students all throughout the United States to draw personalized portraits of other children in poverty-ridden countries. This year, students who were enrolled in Drawing 2 were given the opportunity to draw their portraits of kids ranging from age 6 to age 16 in Nigeria. These portraits were then delivered back to the students in Nigeria in February of 2022. When asked about what the program meant, Mrs. Quick explained “ The Memory Project means global awareness and empathy. It also allows students to connect with other cultures.” Quick went on to say “ I have even seen students cry in the past when watching the videos of the portraits being delivered.” Overall, the Memory Project is one of the most impactful projects that students in Drawing 2 take part in and offers students at BHS the opportunity to change the world through art.
