There is no such thing as too many extracurriculars. No college is going to look at your resume and say “No not this one, he’s got too many extracurriculars.”
So why not add one to the list, and join the Maroon Tribune club!
You get to write for the school news paper. In the process, you learn more about the school and become a part of the community. You progress your writing skills, participate in fun activities, AND make your resume look better! It’s not a very demanding club. Anyone can write an article or two every so often. You get your name out there, and can even direct people to your work.
It’s a great way to express yourself. You can write about pretty much anything school related. From an event you attended, to a club that you like (like the Maroon Tribune), to the fight that happened during the basketball game last Friday. The sky’s the limit, and opportunities to write somewhere people will actually read your work are few and far between. And again, keep in mind that resume buff.
You can be proud of the quality of work that you put out. At any point throughout the process you have numerous ways to get help, from asking an editor for suggestions, to consulting with the club advisor. It’s a great way to progress your writing skills, crucial in this day in age. Even more so with AI being the prevalent essay writer these days, being able to not only form, but articulate your ideas well is a priceless skill to have nowadays.
On the topic of AI, we have a strict policy against just slapping a generated article on our newspaper. We have built in checks, and are always on the lookout. But that just means even more reason for you to write! You stand out because not that many people can proudly say “I can write a whole article or essay all by myself!” Of course some use cases are good, like using it to come up with ideas or reorganizing the general structure, but you can rest assured that any text you see on our newspaper is 100%* human written.
Overall, the Maroon Tribune is an amazing opportunity to write for the school, about the school. It costs nothing, isn’t particularly time consuming, and could end up being a lot of value to you later in your life. * probably more like 98%, some things will probably slip through the cracks and we can’t get everything. But we’ll sure try our best!
